Our Challenge

We are aiming to take 73 landscape photographs in 73 locations across the Peak District in just 73 days. Whenever we are in the Peak we take a fantastic book called 'Through the lens' by James Grant with us. His book marks 73 locations across the Peak which offer potential for beautiful landscape photos.

Please see the About page to find out why we are doing this and which charities we are supporting.

The challenge is sponsorship driven so please please Donate anything you can. The best photos will be printed and exhibited at a local venue after the end of the 73 days (more on that later). Any sales of prints will be added to funds raised.

Thor's Cave V2.0

The list of locations that I'd like to reshoot is only ever growing, one of the locations I was most frustrated with was Thor's Cave and that was because it was entirely my fault that the image didn't come out right (I accidentally left the camera turned on in the bag so had almost no battery, then left the Vibration Reduction turned on on my lens which ruined the sharpness of the photo). More misty conditions had been forecast for the morning so I decided to go for it. Tracy didn't join me for this one because she was exhausted from the last few days was about to return to work the next day; a 4 a.m. get-up wasn't what she needed. I'll admit that I struggled to get up and if it wasn't for t

A relaxed evening at Tegg's Nose

A bit of a strange name for a place I know, but it actually was a really pleasant place to spend the evening. We weren't expecting that much from this location but it took us back to our 'inner child explorers', there are lots of little paths that cut into hills, go round corners and really made for an interesting location. We were a little early, it gave us opportunity to see what the location had to offer. There were two spots in Jame's book (Peak District - Through the lens) that I was particularly interested in, one was a wide shot looking out over a reservoir and into the hills and the other shot was a portrait photograph of some fantastic twisting steps leading down a hill. We found th

FINALLY! Mam Tor!

It seems like we have been to Mam Tor about 1000 times in the last couple of months, each time it's been a bitter disappointment and a wasted morning. Would this trip be the one we had been waiting for? The short answer is yes, it really would. The Met Office had forecast a clear and cool evening with rapidly rising temperatures in the morning, the perfect ingredients for mist. We dragged ourselves out of bed at 4.am. and drove to the lay-by. The walk to the iconic gate/ridge is not a difficult one by any means but at that time in the morning, everything is just a little bit of a struggle. We met James Pedlar at the gate and were also accompanied by fellow photographers Steve Owen and Chris

Making friends with sheep at Thorpe

Even though Thorpe Cloud is only half an hour away neither of us had ever been before. Getting from the car to the summit is only about 25 minutes walk, although it is very steep for a short time. We accidentally went through the wrong field and had to climb over a gate that said "Private Property - Keep out!" oops! Oh well, we went back the right way and now we know for next time. Anyway, the fields were filled with the loudest sheep I have ever heard, it was all you could hear. These sheep weren't like the usual sheep either, these ones were accustomed to people and didn't run away, so much in fact that we made friends with this little fella and named him Fred: Considering this was mid-wee

A terrible ending to a challenging day

28th August 2017 was the hottest bank holiday Monday in August for a very long time. After the hectic Saturday and Sunday we decided to take it a bit easier and do a couple of locations in Matlock. We decided to shoot High Tor in the late afternoon and then Wingfield Manor at sunset. Both locations were less than 15 minutes walk from the car park which is exactly what our legs needed. We got to High Tor after about an hour in the car, we parked up and started walking. It was a lot steeper than we had anticipated (clue was in the name really) but we got up quite quickly. The view from the top was actually surprisingly great, we weren't expecting it to be so good. This is where the first chall

Tired legs and tired eyes

In terms of the weather, the bank holiday weekend was kind to us and we made the most of it. Our trip up to Dean Rocks with James Pedlar left both of our legs rather tired. With that in mind, we decided to choose a slightly easier location for the following evening. We picked Wolfscote Dale, it was only half an hours drive and about 40 minutes walk, it sounded perfect but what we didn't realise that the ascent was actually quite steep and on already tired legs it was a real slog. It probably took us close to an hour to get to the summit, there were lots of cows around but they were all in the fenced off in the adjacent field (much to Tracy's relief). The viewpoint at the summit was rather sp
